If you fancy a weekend in this fabulous corner of England, whether for walking the fells or touring the tearooms, look no further than The Red Townhouse B&B, in Penrith, Ciumbria. Here you'll find a warm welcome, all the comforts of a hotel but with the personal touches you only get in a family-run establishment, and an amazing breakfast!
We visited at the end of October, when autumn was well underway in all its glory and even the view on the motorway approaching the town was picturesque.
This Victorian townhouse, built of local red sandstone, has just two rooms, one with a kingsize bed and the second with a double, but the limited number of rooms means it really does feel like home from home. We weren't even aware of the other guests until breakfast the following morning.
We stayed in the Castlerigg room, with a comfy kingsize bed and large ensuite bathroom. The shower was so easy to use, something we've struggled with in the past elsewhere! The room and bathroom were immaculately kept and the heating was adjustable to our needs, a definite plus point.
The owners, Richard and Elaine, take pride in providing a personal service, always available but not intrusive. They are the well-deserved recipients of a Trip Advisor 2016 Certificate of Excellence, not bad for a business which only opened in March last year.
Ever wondered what it's like to run your own bed & breakfast? Sign up for a behind-the scenes course with Richard and Elaine. Over two days, the couple share the wealth of knowledge they've acquired from running both the Red Townhouse and a business in the Highlands. Click here for more details.
Back to the breakfast… making our selection the night before, we opted for smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and hash brown and a delicious Scottish porridge with maple syrup and brown sugar. The porridge was followed by herby scrambled eggs with chutney on brown toast, a winning combination! Guaranteed to set you up for a day walking on the fells.
Cereals and a full English cooked breakfast were also available together with excellent freshly ground coffee supplied by Farrer's famous coffee shop in nearby Kendal.
The traditional Cumbrian town of Penrith has easy access to the northern end of the Lake District, so it's particularly well positioned if you're hoping to explore the charming town of Keswick or the breathtakingly beautiful hills around Buttermere. The town itself is just an hour away from Manchester on a direct train line.
Mayburgh Double room with private bathroom £65,
Castlerigg Kingsize bedroom with ensuite, £75
