What they say ....

A warm welcome awaits you in the heart of Dorset. La Fosse Bed and Breakfast has comfortable and elegant en-suite rooms to complement the award winning restaurant where you can have a great nights’ sleep before enjoying a hearty Dorset breakfast. It is the perfect place to unwind.

What our tester thought...

La Fosse is a homely restaurant with rooms in the lovely Dorset village in Cranborne. It's family run by Mark and Emmanuelle and we were certainly given a warm welcome after a long drive. We were shown up to the light and spacious Winchester Suite which has its very own sitting room and a warm and clean ensuite bathroom. Everything was clean and well presented and we immediately felt at home. The bed was enormous and incredibly comfortable which meant we both had a great night sleep. We were treated to some full-sized Cowshed toiletries to use during our stay which was very luxurious.

Breakfast was hearty with a great spread of muesli, cereal, yogurt, fruit, cheese and toast - followed by a brilliant cooked menu including a very good full English for my husband and a beautiful piece of smoked haddock and two poached eggs for me.

After a post-breakfast nap (that cosy bed was irresistible with a full tummy) we popped out for a walk. Cranborne village is well served with two pubs and a village shop with a post office and deli full of local produce. We took a lovely walk across the Cranborne estate, with great views of the manor house, which is still owned by the Cecil family. Then a good nose around the garden centre which is housed in the old walled garden of the manor. There was a lovely looking tea room, but we were still full from breakfast. If you like to cycle there are also plenty of cycle routes taking in the surrounding countryside and La Fosse have some bikes that you can borrow during your stay.

Mark kindly packed up lunch for us to take on our travels and after squabbling over who got the last piece of the amazing homemade flapjack we took a short trip to the local town of Wimborne for a nose around. La Fosse is the perfect base for exploring Dorset with the Jurassic coast just 30 minutes drive away and Salisbury just down the road - we were too lazy for all that this time and our cosy room called. We watched a film from the wide range of DVDs on offer and read until it was time for dinner.

The meal was amazing. I had a whole baked red onion stuffed with local goats' cheese and my husband had a trio of celeriac and apple which included soup, remoulade and a gratin - all of which was delicious. Wild mushrooms and spinach gnocchi came next for me while my husband had some beautifully cooked duck. The cheese board at La Fosse has won awards so we had to try it. There were ten different local cheeses and a delicious selection of nibbles. Mark came out and talked us through each cheese. He has a great knowledge of local producers and it was so brilliant to see to talk to him about the different farms and cheese-making techniques. Every table in the restaurant ordered the cheese board that night and Mark happily chatted about cheese to everyone. It was a lovely evening.

If you're in the local area you should definitely book a table at La Fosse for dinner and if you fancy a weekend away we highly recommend it. I should also give a mention to the lovely Inn at Cranborne - the cosy local pub. The whole menu is sourced from within 30 miles and everything we tried was delicious. We couldn't have eaten better for the whole weekend. We came away relaxed, happy and nicely full. A great weekend away.

*Prices start from £69.00 for one night B&B. We stayed in the Winchester Suite which costs from £130.00 per night B&B.
