Whether it’s a good bottle of wine, a new pair of shoes or a bar of chocolate, we each splurge £61.64 a week on rewarding ourselves, with indulgent spending soaring over the weekend.
A closer look at how the nation splashes the cash by VoucherCodes.co.uk reveals that the propensity to pick up a treat increases as the week goes on, with Brits spending the least on Monday, gradually increasing through to Friday before hitting a peak at 12.52pm on Saturday afternoon.
We're most likely to treat ourselves at 12:52pm on Saturdays
Reward spending proves a popular pursuit at lunchtime, when we typically treat ourselves between 12:52pm and 13:26pm, apart from Wednesday’s when we' re more likely to splurge at 16:03pm – perhaps as a reward for making it through hump day.
It seems the majority of us don’t need much of an excuse to indulge in a spot of reward-spending, with nearly a third (31 per cent) stating that the primary motivator for treating ourselves is the fact we haven’t bought anything new for a while. This is only matched by the nation’s love of a bargain, with 30 per cent stating that a great deal could sway us to part with their pennies.
In the mood
General mood and wellbeing also has a great impact on the propensity to splash out on a treat, with nearly a quarter of those surveyed (23 per cent) admitting to treating themselves when they’re bored and a fifth (20 per cent) embarking on a spot of reward-spending after a hard day at work.
Rewarding retail therapy
Clothes top the list of items Brits purchase when we want to treat ourselves, with over half (57 per cent) admitting to indulging in a spot of reward-robing when they want to splash out. But it’s not just clothes that we blow the budget on, with the top 10 reward purchases identified as:
- Eating out
- Good bottle of something
- Beauty treatments
- New DVDs or films
- New tech (Mp3 players, audio docks and speakers).
