7 tips for saving in the supermarket

7 tips for saving in the supermarket
  1. Tesco Clubcard

Earn one point for every pound spent in Tesco or at E.ON, Esso and TopCashBack.co.uk - and one point per £2 spent on Tesco Fuel. Each point is worth a penny if used for in-store shopping but trade-in points for reward vouchers and get three or four times as much, then spend on everything from breakdown cover to cinema tickets.

£80 a week spent in Tesco earns 80 points, or 4160 points a year, equivalent to £42 in grocery vouchers or £125 of rewards. Visit your local store or www. tesco.com/clubcard.

  2. Nectar card

Earn points at BP, Vision Express and eBay. Every £1 spent usually gains two points. Points can be spent on days out, meals, gifts, or at Argos, Homebase and Sainsbury’s. Apply in-store or at www.nectar.com.

  3. Morrisons’ new Match & More card

Morrisons new Match & More loyalty scheme price matches grocery shopping with Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury. You get 10 points for every 1p cheaper your basket would be elsewhere. So, if Lidl is 60p cheaper than Morrisons then 600 points are added to your account. When 5,000 points are accrued, you'll receive a £5 voucher. Join in store or online at morrisons.com.

  4. Marks & Spencer

Buy six greetings cards and get a seventh one free. Pick up a collector’s card in stores. Plus head to M&S cafes for a free coffee card - buy nine coffees and your 10th is free!

  5. Co-operative Membership card

Earn one point for every £1 spent in store and on all Co-op brands, including insurance. 500 points = £5 off your shop. Spend vouchers in stores.

  6. myWaitrose

Get a free cup of tea or coffee to drink in or take away in-store daily. You’ll also get money off items in stores, eg extra savings off everyday items. When you spend more than £5 in store Monday to Friday, or £10 on Saturday and Sunday, you can get a free newspaper. The newspaper offer is also available online where the minimum spend is £60. Plus you can pick up a free Waitrose magazine worth £1.20. Join free in your local store or online, www.waitrose.com.

  7. Compare, compare, compare

Compare the cost of your weekly shop using www.mysupermarket.com. Fill a virtual shopping basket with groceries from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Ocado, Waitrose, Morrisons, Superdrug, Boots, Iceland, Poundland and Aldi and it works out how much it costs from the ten others, too!
