Have you noticed your dog slowing down? And have you observed signs of joint stiffness and loss of mobility? Apparently, 75 per cent of dog owners believe their dog slowing down is nothing more than a sign of old age but it could actually be due to joint pain or mobility issues - and that means your faithful pal could be in pain.

A recent survey by natural pet health Lintbells Ltd, discovered a quarter of pet owners who have noticed these signs have reduced play time with their furry friend as a result, and another 46 per cent have cut the distance of their walks. Mobility plays a huge part in maintaining a good quality of life and even older, less-agile dogs need exercise and stimulation.

Gemma Cunningham, YuMOVE Brand Manager at Lintbells says: “Mobility plays a huge part in maintaining a good quality of life. With the ‘PAWS’ system we hope more pet owners will become confident in identifying the signs of joint stiffness and loss of mobility to ensure they can take action before it impacts negatively on their pets’ physical and emotional wellbeing.”

 'PAWS' and check...

Posture – Have you seen any changes in your dog’s body shape, muscle strength, or simply in the way they walk?

Attitude – Has your dog unexpectedly changed the way they react to you, your family, or to other dogs?

Willingness – Is your dog still up for walks, games, bouncing in and out of the car and barking at every little thing?

Slowing down – Has your dog been slowing down lately – sooner than you hoped they might?

  • A change in the way they walk or run, often slower, limping and/or head nodding as they walk or trot

  • A reluctance to jump up or down (eg into the car or onto the sofa)

  • Reluctant or significantly slower on a daily walk

  • Slow to get to their feet from a resting position

  • Repeated attempts/reluctance to lie down, often turning in circles

  • They avoid or are nervous on slippery surfaces such as laminate floors

  • Have difficulty on steps/stairs and slopes

  • Are licking at their joints

  • Have a newly developed fear of loud noises

  • They show unexplained changes in personality, and are generally more ‘grumpy’

  • Are more defensive towards other dogs

  • Show a loss of muscle mass around legs, shoulders or hips, which may increase size elsewhere to compensate

  • A reduced desire to play games

  • A hunched posture

  • Unexplained ‘pacing’, often at night

  • Difficulty holding their body position while toileting
