Valentine's Day offers the ideal opportunity to honour a love unlike any other - the love for a beloved pet. Data from Co-op Insurance reveals many pet owners have gone one step further, opting for a romantic theme when naming their darling dog or cuddly kitten.
One of literary histories most adored romantic hero’s, Mr Darcy, still manages to inspire many a dog owner, as Darcy tops the list of romantic dog names, followed by soft cuddly ‘Bear’ and with a nod to our internationally renowned romantic French neighbours, ‘Beau’, meaning handsome in French.
Cupid was clearly on the minds of many an owner when naming their furry felines, as ‘Angel’ is a firm favourite, as well as other amorous classics, such as Romeo and Valentine. In addition to fonder names such as ‘Cuddles’ and ‘Cute’, even ‘Smooch’.
Romeo and Juliet continue to be a pair of star crossed ‘companions’, more so, because Juliet is a romantic favourite name for dogs, whilst Romeo is a popular amorous name for cats.
Co-op Insurance’s resident vet Matt Brash said: “For many people, Valentine’s Day is another occasion when they can celebrate their friendship with their pet. One client, who had over twenty cats, always used to serve up a whole cooked salmon for her feline friends for Valentine.
“But there is no need to go that far, for after all what pets enjoy the most, like us, is a bit of quality time, whether it is a cuddle, or a walk. So make sure that you put a bit of extra time aside for your four legged friend this year. But don't go too far, remember whilst chocolate might go down well for your partner is can be poisonous to dogs and cats.”
