Skin firmer

Nivea Cellular Anti-Age Eye Cream, £14.99/15ml

The claim: Designed to visibly rejuvenate the skin by boosting skin cell renewal with a lightweight and gentle formula specially designed for the delicate eye area.

Pat Turner (65) says: Love the neat packaging and that it's easy to squeeze out the perfect amount. I do already use an eye cream morning and night and I found this one pleasant to use. It didn't irritate, absorbed easily and felt comfortable to wear without any greasiness. I didn't see a massive difference immediately, but over time my skin does feel firmer and smoother.

Verdict: I'd definitely buy this product – it's nice to use and great value.

Protective power

Elemis Pro-Collagen Advanced Eye Treatment, £39/15ml

The claim: A revolutionary formula to target fine lines and wrinkles as well as improving brightness and protect the delicate eye area.

Gill Dewy (63) says: I do already use products around my eye area and was surprised how much this eye treatment was. While the instruction were clear it didn't say whether to use morning and night and the two drops it suggested seemed a lot. It's easy to apply, but as it's a serum it does feel quite wet until it was absorbed. This eye serum lasted me about two months and I didn't notice any benefits. I usually like Elemis products so it's a shame this didn't live up to expectations. I wonder if perhaps I'd tried it for longer I'd have had better results.

Verdict: I'm afraid I think this is expensive for what it is, so not for me.

Value buy

Nspa Youthful Eye Cream, £5/15ml

The claim: Contains anti-ageing collagen-boosting peptides with brightening ingredients for a plumped and youthful appearance.

Margaret Hobson (58) says: I use an eye cream on a regular basis and have found that a good one makes a real difference to the bags under my eyes. I like the packaging and that this cream is paraben free and this would entice me to buy it. The texture was lovely. It isn't greasy, but feels creamy and felt lovely on my skin. Straight away I noticed how soft my skin felt, but that was about it. Disappointingly even towards the end of the test I didn't see any improvements, so I'll be returning to my old eye cream.

Verdict: It's lovely to use and a great price, but I'd rather pay a bit more for an eye cream that gives better results.

Great all-rounder

Olay Total Effects Eye Transforming Cream, £14.99/15ml

The claim: Seven age-defying benefits in one handy eye cream. All with a clever formula that includes light-diffusing powders to give skin an instant glow.

Sandra Moorfield (69) says: I like how Olay products are always so recognisable and the instructions are clear and easy to see and read. Only a small amount was needed, so it would last quite a while and it felt nice and light. It sank in easily without feeling sticky and didn't cause any irritations. I didn't notice any instant benefits, but I can now see my fine lines are less noticeable and my deeper lines look softer. There's also a very slight improvement in the appearance of my dark circles.

Verdict: This is a great value eye cream as a little goes a long way.

Dark circle corrector

Dr Nick Lowe Age Correct Eye Serum, £19/15ml

The claim: A combination of advanced anti-ageing ingredients to help tackle pigmentation responsible for dark circles, help reduce inflammation while protecting and strengthening the skin.

Valery McConnell (55) says: I do use an eye cream, but I don't have one that I use regularly. This product looks a bit clinical for my liking and I don't like the pump, which makes it hard to regulate the amount dispensed and is quite wasteful. The cream feels fine on the skin, but doesn't feel anything special and I can't say I saw any instant benefits. Long term I didn't find it worked any better than any other eye cream I've used before – no worse – but no better either. It's disappointing, but I'm still yet to find an eye cream that makes a difference.

Verdict: I wouldn't buy this product – it's not cheap and the results didn't blow me away.
