Complete cosmopolitan cocktail guide

A firm favourite amongst cocktail lovers, the popular Cosmopolitan cocktail or Cosmo as it’s commonly referred to is a simple but tasty alcoholic beverage traditionally made with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice with freshly squeezed or sweetened lime juice.

Versions of the cosmopolitan drink were first created in the 1930s in the form of Gordon's Gin mixed with Cointreau, the juice of 1 lemon plus 1 tsp of Raspberry Syrup. There are debates as to who created the cosmo we all know and love today, but it began to gain popularity in the 1990s particularly amongst young women after being popularised by Sex and the City.

Simple Cosmopolitan recipe

To make one cosmo cocktail, you will need:

  • 15ml of vodka

  • 8ml of lime juice

  • 8ml of triple sec

  • 8ml of cranberry juice

  • ice

  • one lime wedge for serving



  1. Combine the vodka, lime juice, triple sec and cranberry juice in a cocktail shaker.

  2. Add the ice and shake until chilled.

  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

  4. Serve with a wedge of lime.

Variations of a cosmopolitan


A hybrid of a cosmo and bellini, this drink should be served in a champagne flute.


  • 45ml citrus vodka

  • 30ml Cointreau

  • 15ml fresh lime juice

  • Splash of cranberry juice

  • 15ml white peach puree

  • Prosecco to top up


  1. Combine all the ingredients apart from the Prosecco in a cocktail shaker.

  2. Shake until chilled.

  3. Strain into a chilled champagne flute.

  4. Top up with Prosecco to serve.

White cosmopolitan

This recipe uses white cranberry juice instead of red giving the drink a crisper flavour


  • 45ml citrus vodka

  • 22ml Cointreau orange liqueur

  • 15ml fresh lime juice

  • Splash white cranberry juice

  • Orange twist for garnish


  1. Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker

  2. Shake until chilled

  3. Strain into a chilled martini glass

  4. Serve with the orange garnish on top

Strawberry cosmopolitan

If you’re not a fan of cranberry, swap it for strawberry

  • 45ml citrus vodka

  • 3-4 fresh strawberries plus 2-3 for garnish

  • 30ml Cointreau

  • 15ml fresh lime juice


  1. Squash 3-4 fresh strawberries in a cocktail shaker

  2. Add the vodka, Cointreau and fresh lime to the cocktail shaker

  3. Add ice to shaker and shake until chilled

  4. Strain into a martini glass

  5. Serve with a strawberry or two as garnish
