When you're struck down with a runny nose, do you reach for your faithful fabric hanky? You're not alone if so, with a new survey revealing that more than half of all men and almost a quarter of women prefer using these to disposable tissues.

While this is a better solution for the environment, with less waste created, it does unfortunately mean that you could be putting yourself - and those around you - at an increased risk of infection. This is because the cold virus can survive for several hours on surfaces including fabric, contaminating your hands and pocket everytime you reach for it. In fact, the NHS is now advising the use of disposable tissues to avoid constant reinfection.

Although of course this only works if you throw the tissues away after use, rather than storing up your sleeve or under your pillow - something we're certainly guilty of here!
