Do something spontaneous…
- What you can do: Book a last minute ticket to see a show, pop round to a friend’s house for an unplanned night in with a bottle of wine, or go to an exciting event or exhibition.
- Why you should do it: Switching up our normal routine or habits provides us with variety. By doing something spontaneous or 'out of the norm' it reminds us to be present, to be happy in the moment, and to remember that we do have the freedom and power to do what we would like to in this moment.
Do something for the first time which is completely out of your comfort zone
- What you can do: Be the first person on the dance floor, go to the cinema or out to eat on your own, or something more extreme like skydiving!
- Why you should do it: Doing something for the first time gives us a sense of achievement. It provides us with a fundamental need for growth, encouraging us to push our own boundaries. Undertaking new activities or challenges helps us to develop as a person, and enables us to get comfortable with new things; expanding our horizons and giving us an opportunity to build self-confidence and self-belief which is vital to our happiness levels.
Hug someone you love
- What you can do: Give your partner, family member or friend a spontaneous hug.
- Why you should do it: Hugs can instantly boost oxytocin levels, which can help lift one’s mood, as well as help heal any feelings of loneliness, isolation, and anger. Holding a hug for an extended time lifts one's serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness. Hugs teach you how to give and receive, and offer the opportunity to express our affection to the ones we love, making us feel more secure, safe, and relaxed.
- What you can do: Laugh with friends, go to a comedy night, or watch a funny film.
- Why you should do it: Laughter is the best way to relax and, let go of your everyday stresses. It’s also said to have many health benefits including aiding the function of blood vessels and increasing blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.
