Yours was launched way back in 1974 as a newspaper, by charity Help the Aged (now Age UK) in support of what many felt was a neglected part of society – older people. Distributed by willing volunteers via clubs, day centres and churches, it proved a hit.
In 1988 Yours was bought by media company EMAP who turned it in to a monthly magazine. Soon after, a dynamic Yorkshireman, Neil Patrick became editor. Neil wanted Yours to be a mixture of friendship, information, laughter and support. He launched Friends of Yours, the unique free noticeboard and friendship service that is still going strong. That spirit of friendship and support is still at the heart of Yours!
We’re celebrating this landmark anniversary with a special issue, guest edited by our regular columnist Lynda Bellingham.
In our latest issue Lynda reveals her beauty secrets, favourite recipes and has written a special column looking back at her favorite memories from the 1970s.
On being asked to edit this special issue of Yours Lynda says; “Being invited to edit this edition of Yours has made me feel as if I’m celebrating my own 40th birthday all over again! The reason I so enjoy writing my column for Yours is that I feel I am talking to like-minded people who have shared all the same experiences over the years.
"It’s like being part of a club and that’s such a nice feeling. Obviously over the last year, since being diagnosed with cancer, I’ve been completely overwhelmed by readers’ kindness and sensitivity but that hasn’t made me biased. As a reader myself, I feel Yours really tries to reach out to find interesting stories. I’ve so enjoyed being involved in putting this issue together.”
