The British crime drama has been on our screens since 2011 and follows the life of Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope, played by Yours cover star, Brenda Blethyn. Vera is very dedicated to her job working for Northumberland & City Police, and has very close relationships with her colleagues. If you’re new to the gripping drama, here’s everything you need to know.
Vera to return for a ninth series
Brenda Blethyn is set to return to her role as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope in four new feature-length episodes of the popular drama series. The 72-year-old actress will again be joined by her regular co-stars, including Kenny Doughty (DS Aiden Healy), Jon Morrison (DC Kenny Lockhart), Riley Jones (DC Mark Edwards) and Ibinabo Jack (DC Jacqueline Williams).
The first episode sees Vera investigate the murder of newly qualified forensic psychologist Joanne Caswell, whose body is dumped on a landfill site, with the detective discovering she'd been looking into the crime of a former patient who had recently committed suicide.
Why Brenda Blethyn nearly LEFT Vera!
Brenda considered hanging up her hat after series seven, but thankfully changed her mind. She told What's On TV: "I kind of missed doing it. The only way I can describe it is if you go ot for a big slap-up meal and you've eaten too much and someone says, 'would you like to see the menu?' You go, 'Oh no, please leave me alone.' But a week later you get hungry!"
Who are the main characters in Vera?
Other than Vera, there are many regular characters who play her colleagues. Actor Jon Morrison plays DC Kenny Lockhart with David Leon appearing as DS Joe Ashworth in series one to four.
Who else is in Vera?
Vera’s other sergeant, DS Aiden Healy, played by Kenny Doughty, is also another main character. Dr Marcus Sumner is played by Kingsley Ben-Adir with Sonya Cassidy as Celine Ashworth.
