I have rheumatoid arthritis and am at present receiving attendance allowance. My husband has dementia, and obviously I am his carer, but I have been been refused any benefit for him. Should I appeal, or am I not entitled to anything for him?

If he is getting attendance allowance and you are under 60, you may be entitled. However, if you already receive other benefits these will be taken into consideration. Not fair, I know, but the system seems to be there to hinder rather than help carers. I wish you luck too.

I am my husband's carer. He receives Attendance Allowance but as I have state pension I was not allowed Carers Allowance. So they gave me a little off my Council tax. See your local Council or Citizens Advice. Good luck!.

Hi Noxad, I also look after my husband, he claims Attendance Allowance and I get Carer's Allowance until I'm 60. I'm 58 now, I dont know what your best option but I do think Citizens Advice would be able to tell you. It does not seem right that you cant claim anything for him. Do you belong to the Carer's in Touch group, I'm a member and right to several people regularly. Its good to talk to people in the same situation as yourself. Do join if you are not already a member. Good luck with the enquiries, hope your successful. Best wishes Chloebellex
