1 (1:2:2:2:2) 400g balls Sirdar Hayfield Bonus Aran with Wool (F119) in shade Green Heather (934)
Pair each 4mm (UK 8) and 5mm (UK 6) knitting needles.
Cable Needle

4 (4:4:6:6:6) Buttons.

TENSION
18 sts and 26 rows = 10cm/4in square over rice-st using 5mm needles.

It is essential to work to the stated tension to ensure success.

RIGHT FRONT BORDER AND SHAWL COLLAR
Join raglan seams. Using 4mm needles cast on one st (cast on st to be used for sewing border to front), with WS facing, work across 7(7:7:9:9:9)sts left on a stitch holder in 1x1 rib. 8(8:8:10:10:10)sts.
Cont in rib until right front border is of sufficient length to up front to neck shaping, ending with a WS row, sew border in position (using cast on st). Mark positions for 4(4:4:6:6:6) buttons:- first one 5 rows up from lower edge, last one 1/2cm, (1/4in), below start of neck shaping, the rem 2(2:2:4:4:4) evenly spaced between these 2.

Shawl Collar
1st row rib to last st, m1, p1. 9(9:9:11:11:11)sts.
2nd row k1, m1, rib to end. 10(10:10:12:12:12)sts.
3rd row rib to last st, m1, p1. 11(11:11:13:13:13)sts.
4th row k1, m1, rib to end. 12(12:12:14:14:14)sts.
5th row rib.
6th row rib.
Rep last 6 rows 2(2:2:2:3:3) times more then 1st and 2nd rows 0(0:1:1:0:0) times, working extra sts in rib. 20(20:22:24:26:26)sts.
Cont in rib without shaping until collar is of sufficient length to go along neck shaping, across right sleeve top and halfway across back of neck, ending with a WS row.
Cast off in rib.

LEFT FRONT BORDER AND SHAWL COLLAR
Using 4mm needles, cast on one st (cast on st to be used for sewing border to front), with RS facing, work across 7(7:7:9:9:9)sts left on a stitch holder in 1x1 rib. 8(8:8:10:10:10)sts.

Cont in rib until left front border measures exactly the same as Right Front Border to neck shaping, working buttonholes as given to correspond with markers on Right Front Border, ending with a WS row. Sew border in position (using cast on st).

Buttonhole
Next row (RS) rib 3(3:3:4:4:4), cast off 2sts, rib 2(2:2:3:3:3).
Next row rib 3(3:3:4:4:4), cast on 2sts, rib 3(3:3:4:4:4).

Shawl Collar
Work as for Right Front, reversing the shaping.

TO MAKE UP
Join side and sleeve seams. Join seam at centre back of collar reversing sewing, placing seam to centre back of neck, sew collar evenly in position. Sew on buttons. Pin out garment to the measurement given. Cover with damp cloths and leave until dry. See ball band for washing and further care instructions.

YOURS TIP
A large safety pin works well as a stitch holder for small numbers of stitches.
