Congratulations are due to the Knit Wits knitting circle, of Newton Stewart. They've just been awarded £500 towards their community efforts by footwear company, Cosyfeet.

The Cosyfeet Community award offers a one-off donation of up to £500 for registered charities or not-for-profit organisations, that support and enrich the lives of older people. And not only does the Scottish knitting club bring its members together, but their lovingly-crafted work is donated to a whole host of good causes.

Mrs Elkin, club secretary, says, "We knit solely to donate to people in need. We've made hundreds of blankets for the elderly, as well as bed socks and knee blankets for our local nursing home. We're thrilled to bits to have won the award."

"We are mostly ladies, but we have four gentleman members, and our eldest knitter is 97 years old. When I told everyone the good news there was a big clap!"

The Knit Wits will be putting their prize money towards more wool supplies. Dumfries and Galloway will be toasty warm this winter...
