MATERIALS
For long sleeved version:
5(5:5:6:6:6) 100g balls Sirdar Mercerised Cotton DK F039 shade 507
For short sleeved version:
3(4:4:4:4:5) 100g balls Sirdar Mercerised Cotton DK F039 shade 506
Pair each 3.25mm (UK 10) and 4mm (UK 8) knitting needles.
5(5:5:6:6:6) buttons.

TENSION
22 sts and 28 rows = 10cm/4in square over stocking stitch using 4mm needles.
It is essential to work to the stated tension to ensure success.

Using smaller needles and thumb method, cast on 90(96:100:108:112:118)sts.
1st row k3(0:0:3:0:0), p4(2:4:4:0:3), [k4, p4] 4(5:5:5:6:6) times, k12(12:12:14:16:16), [p4, k4]
4(5:5:5:6:6) times, p4(2:4:4:0:3), k3(0:0:3:0:0).
2nd row p3(0:0:3:0:0), k4(2:4:4:0:3), [p4, k4] 4(5:5:5:6:6) times, p12(12:12:14:16:16), [k4, p4]
4(5:5:5:6:6) times, k4(2:4:4:0:3), p3(0:0:3:0:0).
These 2 rows set 4x4 rib and centre st-st panel.
Working in rib as set cont until back measures 12cm(4 3/4in), ending with a WS row.
Change to larger needles and proceed as follows:-
1st row k2(0:0:2:3:0), p4(1:3:4:4:2), [k4, p4] 4(5:5:5:5:6) times, k14(14:14:16:18:18), [p4, k4] 4(5:5:5:5:6) times, p4(1:3:4:4:2), k2(0:0:2:3:0).

Shape Armholes
Cast off 4(4:4:5:5:5)sts in patt at beg of next 2 rows. 82(88:92:98:102:108)sts.
Next row k2tog, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog. 80(86:90:96:100:106)sts.
Next row p2tog, purl to last 2 sts, p2tog. 78(84:88:94:98:104)sts.
These 2 rows set st-st.
Working in st-st proceed as follows:-
For 4th, 5th and 6th sizes only
Work 2 rows dec 1 st at each end of every row.(90:94:100)sts.
For all 6 sizes

Shape Shoulders
Cast off 11(12:13:12:13:14) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 52(56:56:60:60:62) sts.
Cast off 11(13:13:13:13:14) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 30(30:30:34:34:34) sts.
Cast off rem 30(30:30:34:34:34) sts.

LEFT FRONT
Using smaller needles and thumb method cast on 48(51:53:57:59:62)sts.
1st row k3(0:0:3:0:0), p4(2:4:4:0:3), [k4, p4] 4(5:5:5:6:6) times, k9(9:9:10:11:11).
2nd row p9(9:9:10:11:11), [k4, p4] 4(5:5:5:6:6) times, k4(2:4:4:0:3), p3(0:0:3:0:0).
These 2 rows set 4x4 rib and stocking stitch panel.
Working in rib as set cont until left front measures 12cm(4 3/4in), ending with a WS row.
Change to larger needles and proceed as follows:-
1st row k2(0:0:2:3:0), p4(1:3:4:4:2), [k4, p4] 4(5:5:5:5:6) times, k10(10:10:11:12:12).

These 2 rows set position of diagonal rib patt. Working one st more in st-st panel and moving 4x4 rib one st over towards side edge on next and every foll alt row, work 48(54:54:54:58:60) rows more.
Shape Neck
1st row patt to last 7 sts, k2tog(neck edge), k5. 47(50:52:56:58:61) sts.
2nd row patt.
1st and 2nd rows set neck shaping.
Work 12(12:6:12:12:12) rows dec one st as before at neck edge in 3rd and every foll 4th(4th:0:4th:4th:4th) row. 44(47:51:53:55:58)sts.
For 3rd size only
Work 6 rows dec one st at neck edge as before in 1st row. 50sts.
Shape Armhole
Next Row. Cast off 4(4:4:5:5:5) sts in patt, patt to last 0(0:7:0:0:0)sts,(k2tog, k5) 0(0:1:0:0:0) times. 40(43:45:48:50:53)sts.
Next row work in patt.
Working in st-st proceed as follows:-
Work 2(2:2:4:4:4) rows dec one st at armhole edge in every row AT SAME TIME dec one st as before at neck edge in 0(0:0:1st:1st:1st) row. 38(41:43:43:45:48) sts.
Work 3(3:5:5:7:9) rows dec one st at armhole edge in next and every foll alt row AT SAME TIME dec one st as before at neck edge in 1st(1st:3rd:1st:1st:1st) and foll 0(0:0:4th:4th:6th) row. 35(38:39:38:39:41)sts.
Work 40(40:40:42:40:40) rows dec one st as before at neck edge only in 4th(4th:4th:6th:4th:4th) and every foll 6th row. 28(31:32:31:32:34)sts.
Cont without shaping until armhole measures 19(19:20:21:22:23)cm/7 ½(7 ½:8:8 ¼:8 ¾:9)in, ending with a WS row.
Shape Shoulder
Next row cast off 11(12:13:12:13:14)sts, knit to end. 17(19:19:19:19:20)sts.
Next row purl.
Next row cast off 11(13:13:13:13:14)sts, knit to end. 6 sts.
Next row purl to end, cast on one st (this st will be used to sew the back neck edging to back of neck).
Cont on these 7 sts without further shaping until back neck edging is of sufficient length to reach centre back of neck, ending with a ws row.
Cast off.
Mark position for 5(5:5:6:6:6) buttons, the first one 4 rows up from lower edge, the last one 4 rows below start of neck shaping and the rem 3(3:3:4:4:4) evenly spaced between these 2.

RIGHT FRONT
Using smaller needles and thumb method cast on 48(51:53:57:59:62)sts.
1st row k9(9:9:10:11:11), [p4, k4] 4(5:5:5:6:6) times, p4(2:4:4:0:3), k3(0:0:3:0:0).
2nd row p3(0:0:3:0:0), k4(2:4:4:0:3), [p4, k4] 4(5:5:5:6:6) times, p9(9:9:10:11:11).
These 2 rows set st-st panel and 4x4 rib.
Work 2 rows more.
Next row(buttonhole) k3, cast off 2 sts, patt to end.
Next row patt to last 3 sts, cast on 2 sts, p3.
Working in rib as set cont until right front measures 12cm/(4 3/4in), ending with a WS row, working buttonholes to correspond with markers on left front.
Change to larger needles and working buttonholes to correspond with markers on left front proceed as follows:-
1st row k10(10:10:11:12:12), [p4, k4] 4(5:5:5:5:6) times, p4(1:3:4:4:2), k2(0:0:2:3:0).

Shape Neck, Armhole and Shoulder
Work as for LEFT FRONT, reversing all shaping.
LONG SLEEVES (make 2)
Using smaller needles and thumb method cast on 50(50:50:58:58:58)sts.
1st row k3, *p4, k4; rep from * to last 7sts, p4, k3.
2nd row p3, k4, *p4, k4; rep from * to last 3 sts, p3.
These 2 rows set 4x4 rib. Work 5 rows more in 4x4 rib.
Next row (WS) p4(4:9:6:10:10), p2tog, [p6(6:8:2:2:2), p2tog] 5(5:3:11:9:9) times, p4(4:9:6:10:10).
44(44:46:46:48:48)sts.
Change to larger needles and working in st-st inc one st at each end of 5th and every foll
8th(6th:6th:6th:6th:4th) row to 70(52:70:70:82:58)sts.

For 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th sizes only
Inc one st at each end of every foll(8th:8th:8th:8th:6th) row to (74:80:80:84:88)sts.
For all 6 sizes
Cont without shaping until sleeve measures 43(46:46:46:46:47)cm/17(18:18:18:18:18 ½)in, or length required, ending with a WS row.
Shape Sleeve Top
Cast off 4(4:4:5:5:5)sts at beg of next 2 rows. 62(66:72:70:74:78)sts.
Work 4(4:6:4:8:8) rows dec one st at each end of every row. 54(58:60:62:58:62)sts.
Work 18(14:12:22:24:26) rows dec one st at each end of next and every foll alt row. 36(44:48:40:34:36)sts.
Work 8(12:14:10:6:6) rows dec one st at each end of every row. 20(20:20:20:22:24)sts.
Cast off 4(4:4:4:4:5) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 12(12:12:12:14:14)sts.
Cast off.

SHORT SLEEVES (make 2)
Using smaller needles and thumb method cast on 82(90:90:90:98:98)sts.
Work 7 rows of 4x4 rib as given for the long sleeves.
Next row (WS) p7(6:8:8:9:3), p2tog,(p4(3:6:6:4:8), p2tog) 11(15:9:9:13:9) times, p7(7:8:8:9:3).
70(74:80:80:84:88) sts.
Change to larger needles and working in st-st cont until sleeve measures 6cm(2 1/2in), ending with a WS row.
Shape Sleeve Top
Work as given for Shape Sleeve Top of Long Sleeves.

TO MAKE UP
Join shoulder seams. Join cast off edges of back neck edging and placing seam to centre back of neck sew back neck edging evenly in position. Fold sleeves in half lengthways, then placing folds to shoulder seams, sew sleeves in position. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons. Pin out garment to the measurement given. Cover with damp cloths and leave until dry.
