MATERIALS

  • Patons Fairytale Dreamtime DK 100% wool (98yd/90m per 50g)
  • 1 x 50g ball in 04967 red (A)
  • Oddment of 04985 new lime for leaves (B)
  • A pair of 5mm (US8:UK6) needles
  • Darning needle

TENSION

13 sts and 19 rows to 4in (10cm) over st st using 5mm needles and yarn double. Use larger or smaller needles to obtain correct tension.

PATTERN NOTES

Yarn is used double throughout.

SIDE 1
With 5mm needles and A double, cast on 29 sts and work 2 rows in g-stitch.
Work 3 rows in st st.
Now work in pattern thus:
Row 1: (K5, p1) to last 5 sts, k5.
Row 2: K1, p to last st, k1.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: K1, p to last st, k1.
Row 5: K2, (p1, k5) to last 3 sts, p1, k2.
Row 6: K1, p to last st, k1.
Row 7: Knit.
Row 8: K1, p to last st, k1.
These 8 rows form the pattern. Work a further 16 rows in patt. Work should measure just over 5in (12.5cm).
Adjust height at this point if required.
Break off yarn and leave sts on a spare needle.

SIDE 2
With 5mm needles and A double, cast on 29 sts and work as given for first side but begin pattern at row 5. Do not break off yarn.

JOIN TOP
Next row: P2tog, p across rem sts, then p across sts on spare needle to last 2 sts, p2tog (56 sts).
Work 2 rows in st st.
Next row (dec): (K5, k2tog) across (48 sts).
Join in B and work thus, changing colours as given and stranding yarn loosely across back of work:
Next row: P3A, (p1B, p5A) to last 3 sts, p1B, p2A.
Next row: (K1A, k2B, k1A, k2togA) 8 times (40 sts).
Next row: P2A, (p2B, p3A) to last 3 sts, p2B, p1A.
Next row: (K3B, k2togA) to end (32 sts).
Next row: (P1A, p3B) to end.
Break off A and cont in B only.
Next row: Using B, (k2, k2tog) to end (24 sts).
Next row: Purl.
Next row: (K1, k2tog) to end (16 sts).
Next row: Purl.
Next row: (K1, k2tog) to last st, k1 (11 sts).
Cast off very loosely.

MAKING UP

Press very lightly. Join the first few rows from lower edge on each side. Join remainder of seam from top down, leaving a gap each side of approx 3in (7.5cm) for the spout and handle.
