Yarn quantities are based on average requirements when specified tension and yarn is used. Different wool may be used but ensure tension of replacement yarn matches that stated in the pattern for best results.

TENSION
18.5 sts and 22 rows = 10cm/4in square over st-st using 5mm needles or the size required to give the correct tension.
It is essential to work to the stated tension to ensure success.

NOTES
Before beginning, wind MC into 2 balls. Take about 5m (5?yd) of 2nd ball and wind into a 3rd small ball.

Figures in brackets () refer to larger sizes (see measurements chart). Where one set of figures is given this applies to all sizes. Circle the size you wish to make before you start.

OWL EARS
Right Ear
Using MC and CC held together and with RS facing, pick up and k 8sts along top of hat to one side.
Starting with p row work 3 rows in st-st.
Next row: k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. 6sts.
Next row: p to end.
Next row: k1, ssk, k2tog, k1. 4sts.
Next row: p to end.
Next row: ssk, k2tog. 2sts.
Next row: p2tog.
Pull yarn through final stitch.
Turn hat around so the back of the hat is facing and on the row behind the row you’ve just used to pick up sts for the ear, pick up another 8 sts and work a 2nd Ear directly behind the first. Sew the front and back of the
ear together. Repeat on the other side of the hat for the Left Ear.

MONKEY EARS
Right Ear
Using MC and CC held together and with RS facing, pick up
and k 8 sts along side of hat.
Starting with p row work 3 rows in st-st.
Next row: k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. 6 sts.
Next row: p to end.
Next row: k1, ssk, k2tog, k1. 4 sts.
Place sts on stitch holder. Break yarn.
Turn the hat around so the back of the hat is facing, and on the row behind the row you’ve just used to pick up sts for the Ear, pick up another 8 sts and work a second ear directly behind the 1st. Break yarn, leaving a long tail. Graft front and back of ears together using Kitchener stitch.
If you aren’t confident with kitchener stitch
for the monkey ears simply cast them off
and seam them.
Sew sides of ears together.
Repeat on the other side of the hat for the Left Ear.

If you have trouble getting hold of SweetGeorgia yarns see below for stockists details. Alternatively, use
a heavier double knitting or lighter aran weight yarn high in wool content if you are substituting.

MAKE UP
Starting at seam, using crochet hook and MC and CC held together, slip stitch evenly all along edge of earflaps and brim as follows: insert crochet hook into edge of hat, yarn over and pull through. *Insert crochet hook into next st along
the edge, yarn over and pull through, then pull through stitch on hook. Rep from * until you have worked 80(90:100) sts around edge. If desired, pick up a loop under each earflap and chain for 18cm (20cm, 22cm).
Weave in ends, wash in lukewarm water and block.
Sew on felt face as pictured.
Refer to ball band for washing and further care instructions.
