MATERIALS

  • 220 Superwash Aran by Cascade Yarns, 3½oz/100g hanks, each approx 150yd/137.5m (superwash merino wool)
  • 4 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7) hanks in #1993 smoke blue
  • One pair each sizes 6 and 7 (4 and 4.5mm) needles or size to obtain gauge 
  • Cable needle (cn)
  • Stitch markers

GAUGE
24 sts and 36 rows to 5"/12.5cm over St st using larger needles. Take time to check gauge.

STITCH GLOSSARY
RT (right twist) K2tog, leaving sts on LH needle; k first st again, sl both sts from needle.
4-st RPC Sl 1 st to cn and hold to back, k3, p1 from cn.
4-st LPC Sl 3 sts to cn and hold to front, p1, k3 from cn.
6-st RC Sl 3 sts to cn and hold to back, k3, k3 from cn.
6-st LC Sl 3 sts to cn and hold to front, k3, k3 from cn.
M1 p-st (make 1 purl stitch) Insert LH needle from front to back under strand between last st worked and next st. Purl strand through back loop to twist st.

With smaller needles, cast on 86 (94, 102, 110, 118, 126) sts.

Beg chart 1 on row 8 (6, 4, 4, 2) and shape sides as foll:
Next (inc) row (RS) K2, M1, k to first marker, sl marker, work row 8 (6, 4, 4, 2, 2) of chart 1 over next 24 sts, sl marker, k to last 2 sts, M1, k2—94 (102, 110, 118, 126, 134) sts. Cont to foll chart 1 through row 28, then rep rows 5–25, end with a WS row—42 (44, 46, 46, 48, 48) rows completed. AT THE SAME TIME, working each side of markers in St st, cont to inc 1 st each side every 8th row twice more—98 (106, 114, 122, 130, 138) sts.

Divide and Shape V-Neck
Next (set-up and dec) row (RS) K to first marker, sl marker, p2, p2tog, k6, p2; join a 2nd ball of yarn, p2, k6, p2tog, p2, sl marker, k to end—48 (52, 56, 60, 64, 68) sts each side.
Next row K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Next (set-up and dec) row (RS) With first ball of yarn, k to marker, sl marker, p1, p2tog, k6, p2; with 2nd ball of yarn, p2, k6, p2tog, p1, sl marker, k to end—47 (51, 55, 59, 63, 67) sts each side.

Next row K the knit sts and p the purl sts.

Beg Charts 2 and 3
Beg charts on row 3 and cont to shape V-neck as foll:
Row (dec) (RS) With first ball of yarn, k to 3 sts before marker, ssk, k1, sl marker, work chart 2 over next 10 sts; with 2nd ball of yarn, work chart 3 over next 10 sts, sl marker, k1, k2tog, k to end—46 (50, 54, 58, 62, 66) sts each side. Shape Shoulders
Bind off 10 (11, 12, 13, 14, 16) sts at beg of next 2 rows, 9 (11, 12, 13, 14, 15) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 9 (10, 11, 13, 14, 15) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

FRONT
Work as for back.
