Making up Jack

Boots, legs, body and head
Sew up row ends of foot and ankle of boots and, with markers at tips of toes, oversew cast-on stitches; leg seam will be ¼in (6mm) on inside edge of heel. Place a ball of stuffing into toe of each boot, pushing stuffing in with tweezers or tip of scissors. Sew up row ends of legs and sew round crotch.

Stuff legs, pushing stuffing in with tweezers or tip of scissors. Sew up row ends of body, up to halfway up head. Stuff body and head and pull stitches on thread tight, fasten off and finish sewing up row ends. To shape neck, take a double length of yarn to match upper body and sew a running stitch round last row of upper body, sewing in and out of every half stitch. Pull tight and knot yarn and sew ends into neck.

Breeches
Sew up leg seams of breeches from lower edge to crotch. Sew round crotch by oversewing and sew up row ends at centre back. Place breeches on doll, sew cast-off stitches of breeches to first row of upper body all the way round, and sew cast-on stitches of each breeches leg to legs.

Coat
Place coat around doll and sew up centre front. Sew cast-off stitches of coat to neck all the way round.

Sleeves and hands
Sew up row ends of hands and place a small ball of stuffing into hands, pushing stuffing in with tweezers or tip of scissors. Sew up sleeves from wrists to markers at underarm. Stuff arms, pushing stuffing in with tweezers or tip of scissors, and leave armholes open. Sew arms to doll at either side, sewing through coat to body.

Collar
Place collar around neck and sew together under chin. Sew cast-off stitches of collar to neck all the way round.

Cuffs and boot tops
Place cuffs around wrists and boot tops around top of boots, and oversew row ends. Sew cuffs and boot tops to doll using back stitch down centre all the way round.

Features
Mark position of eyes with two pins on 6th row above neck with two clear knitted stitches in between. Begin and fasten off features at top of head under hair and embroider eyes in black and work a vertical chain stitch for each eye, starting at marked position and ending on row above. Embroider mouth in red on the 3rd and 4th row below eyes, making a shallow ‘v’ shape across two stitches.

Embroider nose in pale pink at centre front on row below eyes, making a bundle of five horizontal stitches over one stitch. Shade cheeks with a red pencil. Embroider four buttons in dark grey down front of coat making two short horizontal stitches close together for each button (see below for how to begin and fasten off the embroidery invisibly).

Hair
Oversew row ends of hair and place on doll and, with seam at centre back, pull hair down to neck at back. Sew lower edge of hair to head using back stitch all the way round.

Hat
Sew up row ends of hat, lightly stuff top of hat and place on head. Pin and sew hat to head using back stitch on right side of base of brim, sewing through hat to head all the way round.

Embroidery

To begin embroidery invisibly, tie a knot in the end of the yarn. Take a large stitch through the work, coming up to begin the embroidery. Allow the knot to disappear through the knitting and be caught in the stuffing. To fasten off invisibly, sew a few stitches back and forth through the work, inserting the needle where the yarn comes out.
