MATERIALS
5 (6:7:8:8:9) 50g balls Sirdar Country Style DK F021 in shade 390.
Pair each 3.25mm (UK10) and 4mm (UK8) knitting needles.
1 Button.

TENSION
45 sts and 66 rows = 20cm/8in square over pattern using 4mm needles.
It is essential to work to the stated tension to ensure success.

SPECIAL STITCHES
Patt - Pattern Stitch
1st row (RS) k1, *k2tog, k2, yfwd, k1, yfwd, k2, s1, k1, psso; rep from * to last st, k1.
2nd row purl.
3rd to 20th row rep 1st and 2nd rows 9 times.
21st to 25th row knit.
26th row purl.
27th to 34th row rep 1st and 2nd rows 4 times.
35th to 39th row knit.
40th row purl.
From 1st to 40th row sets patt. Repeat these 40 rows as required.

BACK
Using 4mm needles and thumb method cast on 101(119:128:137:146:164)sts.
Work 2 rows in g-st.
Starting with 1st row, work in patt (see SPECIAL STITCHES, above) until back measures 28(28:30:32:33:34)cm/11(11:11:12?:13:13?)in, ending with a WS row.

Shape Sleeves
Next row (RS) patt to end, using same needle and yarn cast on 27 sts. 128(146:155:164:173:191)sts.
Next row patt to end, using same needle and yarn cast on 27 sts. 155(173:182:191:200:218)sts.
Note: work pattern as written to maintain continuity of patt.
Cont without shaping until sleeves measure 22(24:26:27:28:29)cm/8(9?:10?:10:11:11?)in, ending with a WS row.
Cast off rem 155(173:182:191:200:218)sts in patt, placing markers to indicate back of neck at each side of centre 37(39:38:43:42:42)sts.

LEFT FRONT
Using 4mm needles cast on 47(56:65:65:74:83)sts.
Work 2 rows in g-st.
Starting with 1st row, work in patt until left front measures 28(28:30:32:33:34)cm/11(11:11:12?:13:13?)in, ending with a WS row.

Shape Sleeve
Next row patt.
Next row patt to end, using same needle and yarn cast on 27 sts. 74(83:92:92:101:110)sts.

Shape Neck
Maintaining pattern throughout proceed as follows:

Work 4(4:6:4:8:8)rows dec one st at neck edge in every row. 67(76:82:84:88:97)sts.
Work 7(11:15:11:13:13)rows dec one st at neck edge in next and every foll alt row. 63(70:74:78:81:90)sts.
Work 16(12:8:16:8:8)rows dec one st at neck edge in every foll 4th row. 59(67:72:74:79:88)sts.

NECKBAND
Join shoulder seams.
With RS facing, using 3.25mm needles pick up and knit 31(31:34:34:35:35)sts evenly along right side of neck, 37(39:38:43:42:42)sts between markers at back of neck and 31(31:34:34:35:35)sts evenly along left side of neck. 99(101:106:111:112:112)sts.
Work 4 rows in g-st.
Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT BORDER
With RS facing, using 3.25mm needles pick up and knit 81(85:91:99:103:107)sts evenly along front edge and 3 sts evenly along neckband. 84(88:94:102:106:110)sts.
Work 1 row in g-st.
Next row knit to last 3 sts, yfwd, k2tog, k1.
Work 2 rows more in g-st.
Cast off.

LEFT FRONT BORDER
With RS facing, using 3.25mm needles pick up and knit 3 sts evenly along neckband and 81(85:91:99:103:107)sts evenly along front edge. 84(88:94:102:106:110)sts.
Work 4 rows in g-st.
Cast off.

SLEEVE EDGINGS
(BOTH ALIKE)

With RS facing, using 3.25mm needles pick up and knit 97(105:114:119:123:127)sts evenly across lower edge of sleeve.
Work 4 rows in g-st.
Cast off.

TO MAKE UP
Join side and sleeve seams. Sew on button. Pin out garment to the measurement given. Cover with damp cloths and leave until dry.

  • Yours tip: To make your tension square, cast on a multiple of 9sts plus 2 – so 29 or 38. You don’t need to make an 8in square, you can divide the stitches in two and measure over 4in.
