How to block your finished shawl

Blocking, often called dressing, is the final step to finish your piece. Lace knitting benefits from blocking as the pattern gets opened out beautifully. Gently wash or dampen the finished piece then lay out on a towel or, ideally, foam mats (the children’s play ones are ideal but check for colour fastness). Stretch the shawl out evenly so the lace pattern is fully opened and pin in place using non-rusting pins. Leave until fully dry. Your shawl should be blocked after every wash.
