20 sts and 18 rows in pattern with larger hook = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 in.
Adjust hook size to obtain correct gauge if necessary.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1 (does not count as 1st dc) and work in dc across.
Row 2: Ch 2 (= 1st htr) and work in htr across.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2.
With larger hook, ch 72 (76, 80). Beginning in 2nd ch from hook, dc across = 71 (75, 79) dc. The entire dress is worked in the pattern above. Work in pattern for 4 (5, 6) cm / 11/2 (2, 21/2) in. Mark 1 st on each side of the centre 23 sts. Begin decreasing on the dc pattern row as follows: 2 dc tog, dc until 1 st before marked st, 2 dc tog, work 23 dc, 2 dc tog (marked st + 1 st after it), work in dc until 2 sts rem and end with 2 dc tog = 4 sts decreased across row—67 (71, 75) sts rem. Decrease the same way on every 4th row 6 more times = 43 (47, 51) sts rem. Continue in pattern without shaping until piece measures 15 (17, 20) cm / 6 (63/4, 8) in.
Armhole and back opening: Sl st over the first 3 sts and then work in pattern to centre back, mark centre st and turn. Work each side separately. Dec 2-1-1 sts at the side on the following 3 rows for armhole = 14 (16, 18) sts rem. Continue without further shaping until armhole measures 9 (11, 13) cm / 31/4 (41/4, 51/4) in.
Neck: Skip 6 sts nearest the opening and dec another 1 st on every row 2 (3, 4) times = 6 (7, 8) sts rem. Work 2 rows in pattern, cut yarn and fasten off.
Turn to the other side of neck, skip the marked st and work as for opposite side, reversing shaping.
Work as for back, omitting back opening. Begin the neck when armhole measures 8 (10, 12) cm / 31/4 (4, 43/4) in. Skip the centre 11 (13, 15) sts = 9 (10, 11) sts on each side of neck. Dec 1 st at neck edge on every row until 6 (7, 9) sts rem. Continue in pattern until front is same length as back at shoulder. Work opposite side of front the same way, reversing shaping.
Seam shoulders and sides.
Neck edging: With smaller hook and beginning at base of back opening, work 1 row dc up sides of opening and around the neck. Work 3 dc at each corner and make a ch-3 button loop on one side of opening. On the next row, work dc around back opening and fan edging around neck as follows: *1 dc, skip 1 st, 5 tr in next st, skip 1 st; rep from *, ending with 5 dc in buttonhole loop. Continue in dc on other side of opening. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Armhole edgings: With smaller hook, work around armhole in dc and then work fan pattern around as for neck.
Lower edge: With smaller hook, begin at one side and make a little picot edging: 1 dc in 1st st, *ch 3, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st; rep from * around, ending last rep with 1 sl st into 1st dc. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Blocking: Lightly steam press the dress under a damp pressing cloth. Sew on the button opposite button loop.
