  • Approx 35x80cm (13¾x31½in) piece of lining fabric 1m (40in) long, 3.5cm (1½in) wide gold leather or leather-look strap
  • Sewing needle and matching thread

Before you begin...

ch – chain; dc - double crochet; rep – repeat; ss - slip stitch, st(s) – stitch(es); tr – treble

Finished Size:

34cm (13½in) wide x 40cm (16in) deep

Tension:

7 sts and 3 rows to 10cm (4in) measured over double crochet

Method:

As the tote is lined there is no need to fasten off each colour change; simply carry the yarn loosely up the inside of the bag.

Using yarn A and 10mm hook, make 29ch.

Round 1: 4tr in fourth ch from hook (missed 3ch counts as 1tr), 1tr in next 24 ch, 5tr in end ch. Working up the other side of the ch, 1tr in next 24 ch, ss in top of beginning 3ch to join. (58 sts)

Round 2: 3ch (counts as 1tr throughout), 1tr in each st around, ss in third ch of beginning 3ch to join.

Round 3: Change to yarn B. 3ch, 1tr in each st around, ss in third ch of beginning 3ch to join.

Round 4: Change to yarn A. 3ch, 1tr in each st around, ss in third ch of beginning 3ch to join.

Rounds 5–10: Rep Rounds 3-4.

Round 11: Rep Round 3.

Round 12: Using yarn B, 1ch, 1dc in each st around, ss in first dc to join.

Fasten off.

Making Up and Finishing:

Weave in all loose ends and gently steam block. Cut the gold leather or leather-look strap into two 50cm (20in) lengths and sew straps in place using the photographs for guidance.

For the ridges: Join yarn B around the post of any tr in a yarn B stripe. Work 1dc around the post of each tr stitch in the same yarn B row travelling perpendicular to the direction the tote was crocheted in. Slip stitch in first dc to join and fasten off. Repeat for each yarn B row.

Sew the lining and attach to inside of the tote.

  • Yours tip:

Why not play with colours for the yarn, strap and lining? Try subtle pastels, clashing neons, or even fruity brights!
