Before you begin...
CC – contrast colour; ch – chain; cont – continue; dc – double crochet; htr – half treble; MC – main colour; RS – right side; ss – slip stitch, st(s) – stitch(es); tr – treble.
It is essential to work to the stated tension to ensure success.
If necessary, change the hook size to give the correct tension.
Yarn quantities are based on average requirements when specified tension and yarn is used. Different wool may be used, but ensure tension of replacement yarn matches that stated in the pattern for best results.
Working crochet motifs
Crochet motifs are worked in the round, so you join each round up with a slip stitch to complete it.
They are worked with the right side always facing, so don’t turn the work as you would with rows.
Motifs can be sewn together, but you may find it easier to crochet them together. You can do this either by slip stitching or using a double crochet stitch through both motifs.
The two methods give a different effect, so experiment to find an effect you like.
Make a total of 112 squares in the following colours (with MC always used in Rounds 2 and 3):
23 baby pink
22 pale green
23 deep pink
Using CC, make 4ch, join with ss to form a ring.
Round 1: 1ch, 12dc in ring, cut CC, do not fasten off, join MC with ss in first dc. 12 sts.
Round 2: Cont with MC, 3ch (counts as first tr), 1tr in same st, 2tr in each st to end, join with ss in top of 3ch. 24 sts.
Round 3: 3ch (counts as first tr), 2tr in same st, 1htr in next
st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts,
1htr in next st. [3tr in next st, 1htr in next st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 1htr in next st] three times, join with ss in top of first 3ch. 32 sts.
Block and press squares lightly using a damp cloth.
Set out 112 squares with 28 squares along x 4 squares deep, with the colours evenly spaced and with squares wrong sides facing up.
With right sides together and MC, join squares in the sets of 4. Join these sets together using MC and in the order set out.
Block and press lightly on the wrong side.
With RS together, join seam. Turn RS out.
With RS facing, join MC in one stitch to the side of the seam. 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in next and each st around top to end. Do not put a dc in the seam. Join with a ss into first dc.
Sew in ends after making each square to avoid a big job at the end.
When sewing in end of Round 1, sew around the stitches and pull tight to close up the hole in the centre.
