Cushion Pad:
Use the body section as a pattern for a wedge-shaped cushion pad. Lay the crocheted piece flat on a piece of fabric and draw all round. Add a 1cm (½in) seam allowance, cut out fabric and stitch side seams. Clip corners and turn right sides out. Stuff firmly with polyester toy filling, then tuck in 1cm (½in) on each top edge and oversew together along folds.
Making up
Using tails of yarn, and placing right sides together, stitch the four side seams in backstitch. Turn right sides out and stitch wings in place, one on each side. Stitch the base of each tail feather to the top (pointed) end of the back, on the inside. Place the cushion pad inside. Starting from the tail end, stitch the top seam using either the oversewing or flat seam method (see pages 15 and 16), stopping when you reach 13 sts from front end. Fasten off.

times, dc2tog over last 2 dc; join with a ss to 1st dc of round (20 sts).
Round 17: 1 ch, 1 dc in 1st dc, 1 dc next dc, (dc2tog over next 2 dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc) four times, dc2tog over last 2 dc; join with a ss to 1st dc of round (15 sts).

Cut yarn, leaving a tail, but do not fasten off.
Stitch eyes in place on head; sew a button in the centre of each crocheted eye piece, using black thread.
Stuff head. Thread yarn tail at top of head into tapestry needle and pass the needle in and out of the stitch loops on the last round. Pull yarn tail to close gap and enclose stuffing, then fasten off securely. Stitch crest in place along top of head. Slip Neck ruff over head and sew in place, stitch by stitch, to expose stitch loops around base of head. Stuff beak and stitch in place.

Yours Tip:

If you are making the cushion for a child, make sure you stitch all the components firmly in place.
