After doing my family tree, I’m looking to research my husband’s. He’s Scottish and I understand they have a different set up as far as records go?

The Scots do things slightly differently when it comes to family history. With the exception of the census, the records are very different from those south of the border. The equivalent to parish registers are the Old Parish Registers (OPRs) which began in the 16th century and finished in 1855, when civil registration started. There’s no real equivalent to certificates, instead there are detailed entries in registers, which can be seen by anyone.
For a fee, details are now available online at Scotland's People. Alternatively, records can be seen at: The General Register Office for Scotland, New Register House, 3 West Register Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 3YT. Tel: 0131 334 0380 or visit General Records Office
