I’m going on a plane for the first time and am very nervous, can you make any suggestions for staying relaxed and healthy on the plane?

With over 115 million passengers using the UK airports in 2007, air travel is undoubtedly the safest mode of transport.

However, new experiences do sometimes frighten people and if you are nervous consider a Fear of Flying course. They can be taken free on the internet using
Flying Without Fear or you can take a short flight and overcome your fear with Virgin's Flying Without Fear programme

And here are some more tips on staying clam, refreshed and relaxed before, during and after your flight

Airfares
The cheapest airfares can be found on the Internet although you will need a credit card and a lot of patience.

Check different routings and consider using smaller more remote airports.

Most airlines generally allow you to change your return date for a fee but check on low-fare tickets, make sure yours does.

Late night and early morning flights tend to be cheaper but think about the time you will be arriving at your destination… you don't want to arrive in a strange city in the middle of the night with no accommodation!

I flew for the first time at the age of 64. I have angina and tinitus and was very apprehensive especially with the ear thing!!!! I did have a drink - one glass of wine. I decided I was going to enjoy the first-time experience and to h**** with the consequences. I loved every new minute- from checking in to watching the flight announcements, getting on the plane and the actual flight. You haven't lived if you've never seen the tops of clouds, the contours of England - as you leave - and the excitement of arriving at your destination. Just enjoy. Don't worry and lets know how you went on.

I have only just come accross this post, hope I am not to late for the person in question. I was terribly nervous of travelling to New Zealand to see my family a very good friend bought me the book 'The Easy way to Enjoy Flying' by Allen Carr. Would reccommend this to anyone it got me through and I am no longer afraid to fly. There are no tricks to do like special breathing techniques etc., just plain basic facts. Go ahead read it and enjoy your future flights.
