Once I’ve taken my hearing aid off at night, I worry I won’t hear the smoke alarm. Are there any solutions?

The RNID A223 smoke alarm system was designed for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Smoke detectors activate the system, a strobe light flashes from the base unit, and a pad, which you place under your pillow, will vibrate.

The alarm is mains powered, but has its own rechargeable battery to give you 100 hours’ standby if you have a power cut. It has a two-year warranty and is priced at £112.80, plus £6.94 p&p.

Order online at RNID shop (look under ‘Alerting devices’) or by calling 01733 361199 for a free catalogue. If you are registered hard of hearing, you need not pay the VAT, reducing the price to £96 plus p&p. You must supply details when you order.

Some of our readers have had these installed cheaper or free of charge with help from the local Deaf Awareness society. Check with your local authority for contacts or details on grants available.

Hi I believe this is correct. I am at the other end of the story - about to have a stairlift installed at a very low cost, provided by Social Services and maintained by them. Its a 'second hand' one, but guaranteed safe and serviced for 4 years free of charge - on the understanding that it goes back to them when no longer needed.

You can buy personal alarms in many places, including the local police station.I bought mine off the internet and carry it with me every time I step outside my door. They are not expensive. You will get plenty of answers on this item. It is a shame that we have to go to these extremes now adays, but as I am continually told,"Thats life today"
