My neighbour is claiming unemployment and housing benefit, but is still working cash in hand. I value her friendship but resent the fact that I have worked and paid my tax and stamp each month and she is able to sponge off the system/ How can I make her stop?

poshpaws...I agree with Henry Farber...this woman, and many more like her, are thieves, pure and simple. There are no 'buts'...Anonymous needs to report her..there is a special phone number for this and calls are confidential. She doesnt need to remain a friend to her...her neighbour is laughing at her for being honest.

pDoes your friend realise she can end up with a criminal record if she is caught - she is breaking the law. She would also have to pay back everything she has illegally gained. It isn't worth it. But the longer it goes on the worse it becomes. Also - she is allowed to work upto 16hours a week - the only problem is some money is deducted from her benefits but she would still be entitled to housing benefits etc - legally. You may need to 'shop' her but it would be a help in the long run./p

pI was a lone parent my ex never contributed anything even when the courts caught up with him. It was a great struggle raising my children on benefits until they were of an age when I could get back to work. However, I had no qualms in reporting a couple whom my daughter was friends with (years later) they were claiming all they could and he was working earning good money. It is these people who get everyone the name of scrounger when they have to rely on a system put there for the benefit of anyone who needs it. This is also the reason why the money is hard to live on, but at least we are in a country where you can get financial help and anything is better than nothing. It is not given so that you can have holidays etc., it is there to enable you to keep a roof over your head and food in your stomach. Unfortunately there will always be people who abuse any system./p

pI would have no problem at all reporting her to the DHSS-it can be an anonymous letter -people who are cheating the system should be reported and made to toe the line and pay their fine if appropriate. babybug/p
