I swim regularly to keep me in trim, but my knees are troublesome so I can't do too much else. Does anybody have experience of Pilates exercise and is it a good way to unwind?

The Pilates method, devised by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, focusses on training the postural muscles. The original Pilates exercises were very advanced and strenuous and practised by dancers and other elite athletes, but the various Pilates teacher training organisations have adapted these to be suitable for the general public. Done properly, Pilates exercises will improve your posture, correct muscle imbalances and reduce problems such as neck tension and low back pain. Done badly, they will probably cause you injury! It is very important to choose a beginners class or one where the instructor offers different levels for the exercises, so that you do not attempt exercises that are too advanced too soon.

Have to agree with Eileen. I also go once a week and wouldn't miss it. As she says you work at your own level so can make it as easy or as hard as you like. We always have relaxing music playing quietly in the background and I always feel really good at the end of a session. I would recommend it to anyone.

I go to Pilates class every week.. and it is something I would never miss. I don't always feel like going, but once you are there you seem to relax with the exercies which can be as easy or hard as you like.. there are different levels on every exercise. Our class is really friendly and we have a good giggle at times. After I have finished the hour I feel really good and ready for anything. I can really reccoemnd it to anyone whatever your ability or age. Give it a try.

Yes it is I've been doing Pilates for a few years now to help me relax from a very stressful job.It strengthens your core muscles & teaches you to breathe from the abodmen.I've recommended it to my friend & it's help her become more mobile so enquire in your area & join a class.
