I am a 58 year old carer for my disabled daughter. I took early retirement from nursing last year and claimed the carer’s allowance. I understand that when I reach 60 and claim my retirement pension, (I have had a forecast and am entitled to approx £59 per week) that I will no longer be able to claim carers allowance as well. What if I don’t claim my pension, but claim it in a few years, will I get it backdated? The reason being is that I am still a full-time carer.

Can I advise you to be very very careful. I officially deferred drawing my pension when I reached 60. I drew Carers Allowance for my mother 18 months later when she needed more care and I could no longer continue my business. In May this year she went into full time residential care and I tried to claim my pension. I have lost about 4K by drawing Carers Allowance instead of my retirement pension. Pension can only be backdated for 12 months - and then you would only receive the difference between the Carers Allowance and the amount your pension would have been if you had drawn it. Hope that makes sense..... If you are entitled to Pension Credit, I think that Pension Credit can now only be backdated for 3 months. Please take advice from the Pension Service before making a decision - I found them quite helpful, but in retrospect I can see no benefit whatsoever in drawing just the Carers Allowance. Hope you get it sorted out ok, but please look into it very carefully so that you don't lose money!
