I’d like to take up a exercise, but I’m not what you’d call energetic. The thought of running round a sports hall or pounding away in a gym isn’t my cup of tea. Do you have any other suggestions?

Yoga combines physical and mental exercises to promote flexibility, reduce stress, and increase stamina and strength – reasons enough to give it a go. Yoga means ‘union’ and practising the ancient discipline leads to a better balance of mind, body and spirit. You can even tailor your own practice to develop these attributes according to your needs. Regular practise is recommended, even just ten minutes relaxation. Rest assured, yoga doesn’t have to be about standing on your head or sitting in fancy cross-legged positions! Just wear clothing that won’t restrict your movement. Join a class to start with. Some have non-slip floor mats but it’s a good idea to take a blanket.

Have you thought about golf? I have never been into sports, but took up golf on a whim and have been playing for 5 years now. Ok, I am not brilliant, but it is a lovely way to meet other ladies and a five mile walk and a lovely cuppa at the end can't be bad!

Judith,have you considered doing Tai-Chi, some local adult education collages run courses,or if like me join a Tai-Chi-Chuan School. You will find men/women of all ages and you dont have to be fit or energetic to start, as the movements are done very slowly,you can start at complete beginner and go up to the next level when you feel that you are ready. I can thoroughly recommend giving it a try. Good luck.

Walking is always good for 'non-athletic' people like us. Having had two back operations my exercises are limited but my physio recommended deep breathing exercises and I bought a stepping machine with handles at arms height and use this every day. It tells me how long I have been stepping, how many steps and how many calories I have burnt. Even two minutes a day makes a difference. The principal is to MOVE every day. Good luck and let me know how you feel after a week or so.

What about trying water aerobics..this exercise not only works all muscles but the in the weight of the water you are less likely to damage any muscles or ache afterwards...plus you could make friends in the swimming pools too...as this is great fun...try it!

I find swimming a lovely way to exercise (I am not a confident swimmer only having learnt 4 years ago when I reached 60!) Also the aqua-fit class is great fun - a bit more energetic though!
