I need a climbing plant to cover a bare fence at the bottom of my garden. The fence is in the shade all day. Any suggestions please?

The obvious choice for this position is ivy. It is evergreen, clings without needing trellis or wires and there are beautiful varieties with variegated leaves in yellow and white. You could plant it with winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) which blooms in winter and will add a sprinkle of bright yellow stars to the picture.
If an evergreen is not so important, you could try the climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris) but this is very slow to get started as a young plants. If you do not need something that sticks to the fence but that can be pruned against the fence, pyracanthas are ideal and they are evergreen.

Hi do not grow a plant up yopur fence, erect trellis in front of the fence and grow russia vine, it grows like a weed but you can cut it back. If the fence needs replacing you can lower the trellis and renew the fence re erect the trellis and no one knows the difference. If tyour put off by the other comments on russian vine, try good old honeysuckle or Hydrangia petiolaris are good alternative but take much longer to establish, I like Jasminium nudiflorum. From the BBC Gardening website - Russian Vine Russian vine Another common name for Russian vine is mile-a-minute, and that's a conservative estimate. It grows far too big, too fast and too ugly even for a large garden. In a small garden there wouldn't be standing room after the first season. This plant is probably worth avoiding.

We bought a "passion flower" plant from Morrisons at £1-99 and planted it 2 years ago in the hope that it would maybe hide our fence. It is absolutely brilliant. It has lovely unusual flowers and also it bares fruit. It has now completely covered our fence at about 20 foot long and also grown down the other side so benefiting the neighbours as well. All this for £1-99 from Morrisons.

Hi The fastest plant I know of is a Russian Vine and really prolific lovely red leaves will cover it in no time . Bye
