Can anyone tell me how to get rid of snails without using chemicals or slug pellets?
By Yours magazine
Slug and snail killer without the use of chemicals. Yours gardening and Garden Answers web editor Geoff Stebbings offers some useful tips.
Slugs and snails are the worst pests in most gardens. If used correctly, slug pellets pose no threat to wildlife but there are other methods if you want to avoid chemicals.
From April to September you can add a biological control, usually sold as ‘Nemaslug’ to the soil. This is very effective but only kills slugs, not snails. Many gardeners find that copper rings around plants work well, or you can trap them by leaving some lettuce leaves on the soil – it attracts the pests and you can then pick them up and dispose of them however you see fit.

For the last 5 years we have used Nemaslug and it works, then next year we have the same level of infestation. I belive that I am invaded by my neighbours slugs who go looking for pastures new.

I find human hair very helpful - spread around plants and the slugs and snails do not like the hair sticking to their bodies at all. Needs re-arranging after heavy rain !

I use plain old table salt. I gather them up in a tin, sprinkle salt over them and that's it. Works well for me and does not poison the environment. Hope this helps.

I have it on good authority that spreading sheep wool around the plants will deter the snails. Can't get more environmentally friendly than that but haven't tried it so don't know if it works. Think probably the smell (especially after rain) keeps the snails and slugs away!
