Garlic is renowned for its beneficial effects on the heart and circulation. It contains a substance called allicin, which dilates the blood vessels and helps thin the blood. This helps blood flow more freely around the body, which can improve poor circulation.

Ginger is a warming spice that could help clear clogged arteries and improve sluggish circulation. It also reduces the risk of blood clots by making platelets in the blood less sticky and is thought to strengthen the heart. Try grating fresh root ginger into healthy stir-fries.

Blueberries get their colour from a pigment called anthocyanin. This helps strengthen the walls of veins and arteries, which can improve circulation to the extremities. Blueberries also contain pectin, which helps prevent plaque building up in the blood. Sprinkle on to cereal or yogurts, or they're delicious on their own.

Beetroot too gets its colour from anthocyanin and is also great for the immune system and may help lower cholesterol.

Fresh pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which studies have suggested may reduce the risk of blood clots, as well as aiding digestion. Pineapple also contains micro-nutrients that help reduce the stickiness of blood, which can improve poor circulation.

If you've been prescribed blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin, or are taking aspirin, make sure you consult your GP before changing your diet.
