Ageing hair takes a little extra TLC to get the best results, so we asked hairdressing guru Andrew Barton for his top hair care tips to ensure you have salon worthy locks every day.
Prevent dry hair Andrew says: "Dry hair is often a result of many factors including health, chemical treatments and the ageing process. Like your skin, hair becomes drier as we age so it’s important to help top up moisture levels by using conditioner every time you wash your hair. Conditioners work by closing the cuticle scales of the hair aligning them to be smoother and locking in the moisture. Many women I speak to are scared of conditioners as they worry they’ll weigh down the hair, so only use your conditioner on the tips of the hair not the scalp. And be religious about using a deep conditioning mask at least once a week to further build hair strength and moisture, as treatments like this penetrate deeper into the hair cuticle giving a longer lasting conditioning effect. Try Andrew Barton I Love Volume conditioner for its super lightweight texture and Andrew Barton Gloss Boss Deep Conditioning mask, both available from Asda stores nationwide."
Cheat thicker looking hair Andrew says: "Ask your stylist for a haircut that incorporates blunt cutting, which gives the ends of the hair a thicker chunkier result. Layering is often recommended, but I tend to favour haircuts without layers for thinner hair as layers only reduce the amount of hair. Variations of bob cuts can be more flattering. Using a mousse to style the hair with will add more texture and body to the hair, plus will help your style last longer. Heated rollers are great too. Try the Andrew Barton I Love Curls Heated Rollers from Argos, complete with an instruction guide and easy to use clips."
Choose the right colour Andrew says: "Much of choosing the right style and colour depends on the good advice from a stylist. Identifying your face shape is made easy by tying your hair back and looking in the mirror, on the reflection of your face on the mirror draw with lipstick what you see this will give you your face shape. In terms of colour whether you are warm or cool tones is the important thing. Women with darker complexions and darker eye colours tend to be warm with warmer browns red’s and blondes suiting them and women with fair skin and pale eye’s tend to be cool with paler lighter colours suiting there skin."
Stop making those common hair mistakesAndrew says: "The most common mistake women make as they age is to wear the same hairstyle for too long, which can really pile on the years, so stay current and ask your stylist for something fresh every once in a while. My biggest tip would be to spend an extra five minutes on your hair each day when styling or treating whatever your age and you’ll see better results. Too many women want a high maintenance look with a low maintenance routine. Caring for and styling your hair is an investment in your image and therefore confidence and self-esteem."
